Fantasy Forecast, Batters Roundup for Week of April 8, 2013

We’ll round up notable changes and trends affecting the major fantasy baseball statistical categories. In pitching, we’ll focus on the major counting statistics (Wins, Losses and Saves) and the cumulative statistics (ERA and WHIP).  In batting, we’ll similarly focus on counting statistics (HR, RBI, Runs and SB) and cumulative statistics (AVG).

Our intent is to provide you insight that allows you to identify waiver wire pickups or optimize your daily/weekly starting lineups.

Movers and Shakers, Counting Batting Stats

Toronto Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia has spent two years in the majors, exhibiting strong power (for a catcher), limited runs, RBIs and a lowly BA. However, Arencibia seems to be taking a step forward in 2013.  A strong spring, an outstanding showing at the World Baseball Classic, and he’s started April with three home runs in the first week. Blue Jays’ Manager John Gibbons has shown a willingness to bench DH Adam Lind against LHPs, inserting Arencibia as the DH and fifth hitter.  This will increase Arencibia’s ABs and hopefully his power and RBI production. If ya got ‘em, start ‘em daily.

For those of you in deep leagues, or where you have a large bench, scan Travis Hafner’s availability. The left-handed hitting Hafner stroke is tailor-made for the Yankee Stadium right-field porch.  After a big Monday night (2-for-3 with two walk, four RBIs and three runs), Hafner stands with a .391 AVG, 2 HR, and 6 RBI. In a depleted Yankee lineup, Hafner will start against all righties and may see the occasional start against southpaws. Lineup accordingly.

Mark Reynolds is seeing playing time at DH with the Indians, but his 3B eligibility makes him a great pickup if you’re weak at the hot corner.  He’ll strike out a ton (three seasons with 200+ SOs), but he has ample power.  He’s already clubbed four home runs in five games. With his hot start, I wouldn’t trade for him, but nab him if he remains undrafted. Watch him go hot (HRs) and cold (SOs), and try to ride the highs.

Movers and Shakers, Cumulative Batting Stats

Arizona outfielder Gerardo Parra is seeing more playing time than anticipated with Cody Ross and Adam Eaton on the DL.  He’ll log time at CF as long any of Ross or Eaton are out.  Parra is a good source of SBs and decent average.  He’s still available in most leagues and is a good fit for leagues requiring CF (rather than OF) eligibility.
