Derek Norris's past few months are quite the tale. On December 2, the San Diego Padres traded him away to the Washington Nationals. With Wilson Ramos recovering from a torn ACL, Washington penciled in Norris as its catcher. Then in February, the team signed Matt Wieters and Norris became expendable. After being waived on March 15, Norris has found a new home.
Despite reports that the Toronto Blue Jays offered Norris more money, the 28-year-old backstop opted for the home that would provide him more playing time. There will certainly be plenty of playing time for the first couple months of the season with Ramos, also an ex-Nat, headed to the disabled list as he works his way back from knee surgery.
In terms of fantasy appeal, it's difficult to get excited about Norris. He looked overmatched last season in his fifth season in the majors as he mustered just a .186/.255/.328 slash line with a 55 wRC+. It marked the lowest wRC+ amongst all MLB players with 450-plus plate appearances last season. To make matters worse, Norris registered an ugly 30.3 percent strikeout rate and walked in just 7.9 percent of his trips to the plate.
The one thing Norris can provide is power. He's hit 14 home runs in each of the last two seasons and in 2015 posted a career-high 33 doubles. He should see the majority of starts until Ramos is cleared and is a near certainty to hit above .230 this season, but he's completely off the fantasy radar.
If there is some fantasy relevance here, it's for Tampa Bay pitchers. Norris is one of the better pitch framers in the game and should be able to help Blake Snell, Alex Cobb, Chris Archer and others squeeze in some more strikes.
