The Detroit Tigers have reportedly traded All-Star outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks in what appears to be the first real blockbuster trade of July.
While the 29-year-old Martinez has been on the block for some time, there had not been any rumors linking him to the surprising Diamondbacks. But this a darn good get for a squad that's currently competing for a playoff spot in the National League.
Martinez is hitting .305 with 16 homers and 39 RBI on the season. He's also put up a .300-plus average in two of the previous three seasons, boasting 38 homers and 102 RBI en route to earning an All-Star appearance back in 2015. Martinez will likely take over for the injured Yasmany Tomas in left field out of the gate for Arizona.
In return, Detroit received three prospects from the D'Backs. That includes No. 4 Diamondbakcs prospect, infielder Dawel Lugo, who was hitting .282 with seven homers and 43 RBI in Double-A at the time of the trade. Shortstop Sergio Alcantara, who entered the season as Arizona's 21st-best prospect, was playing at Single-A ball at the time of the deal. Meanwhile, Jose King didn't make any ot the D'Backs top-30 lists during the spring.
