The New York Yankees may have been dealt a major blow on Wednesday night, though it may be a few days before they find out how bad it will be. Nathan Eovaldi, who had been struggling as of late, left his start on Wednesday and was diagnosed with a right elbow tendon injury. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, with Luis Severino called up to take his place in the rotation.
There is some speculation this could be season-ending for Eovaldi, with the Yankees thinking being that its best to keep him protected and avoid further damage in a season where they aren't competing for a World Series. If this is the end of Eovaldi's 2016 season, he will finish with a 4.76 ERA, the worst of his career, a 1.31 WHIP and just a 7.0 K/9 rate.
New York will once again turn to Severino, one of their top, young players as the season began, who has struggled in the majors this season. Across 11 appearances, eight starts, Severino has allowed 34 earned runs and 57 hits over 47 2/3 innings pitched, a 6.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. He was up earlier in August for two starts, though his most recent one was another ugly outing with five runs allowed in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Fantasy owners can still find plenty to like about Severino, especially if you look back at his numbers from last season. In 2015 as a rookie, Severino finished with a 2.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and struck out 56 batters in 62 1/3 innings pitched.
Severino is still young as he won't turn 23 until next February, so he is much more of a long-term dynasty favorite then a pitcher to get to finish the 2016 season. But because of his strikeout ability, he could be worth rostering and just using for spot starts when he faces a low-contact, heavy swing and miss team.
