If I told you that Mike Trout was having a good year you wouldn’t bat an eye. Guys like Trout are expected to perform at a high level every night. Fortunately for baseball players, coaches and fantasy owners you aren’t expecting every single player to put up Trout like numbers. The cool thing that does happen when everyday, run of the mill players start performing very well people take notice. Below is the five most surprising players through three weeks.
5. Emilio Bonifacio, Chicago Cubs
Holy cow what a sizzling start has Bonifacio gotten off to. He currently has the seventh best batting average in baseball at a mark of .351 with a .407 on-base percentage. He has recorded 26 hits and has scored 12 runs all while stealing nine bases. This guy is going to get you stolen bases but the chances of him keeping his average even in the low .300s isn’t going to be any walk in the park. For now his fantasy owners and Cubs fans can all be happy with the production this guy has put up.
4. Dee Gordon, Los Angeles Dodgers
Every knew that Gordon was fast but I don’t think anyone realized the threat he could be once completely healthy. Gordon currently has the fourth best batting average in baseball checking in at .369. A lot like Bonifacio, Gordon doesn’t hit for power but he did manage to hit one home run to this point in the season. His best numbers are his stolen bases and he has 12 of them which leads all of baseball. He is a lot like Bonifacio due to the fact that he likely won’t be batting a gawdly .300 all season.
3. Chris Colabello, Minnesota Twins
Arguably the most surprising baseball player this year goes to Colabello. He has the second most RBIs in the league right now and is hitting at a mark of .347 with a .390 on-base percentage. If those numbers aren’t enough to catch your attention than maybe his league leading nine doubles will do the trick for you. This guy has done everything and more for the Twins this year, now lets see if he can keep it going.
2. Dayan Viciedo, Chicago White Sox
Here we have another low-key name that makes the list. This guy is absolutely in a zone at the plate and his batting average proves it. He’s batting .361 with nine RBIs and one home run. He has also shown decent plate discipline as he has walked six times this year putting his OBP at a respectable .412. His numbers may not be as impressive as the other names on this list but the batting average skyrockets him to the top two.
1. Charlie Blackmon, Colorado Rockies
Here we have it, the number one surprising baseball player through the first three weeks of the season. Mr. Blackmon has an unreal batting average of .411 to go with a .450 OBP and four home runs. He has easily been the most impressive and surprising hitter of the regular season but the chances that he can continue the dominant work throughout the next few months is still in question.
