One of the hottest questions around the All Star Break centered on when the Houston Astros would call up top prospect Alex Bregman. While Bregman has clearly done enough in Double-A and Triple-A to warrant a call-up. But Houston is loaded in the infield with Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve, a hot-hitting Luis Valbuena and A.J. Reed. Now another name has been added to the mix with Houston reaching a five-year, $47.5 million deal with Yulieski Gourriel.
Gourriel is a bit older than many of the top hitters MLB teams sign out of Cuba. Gourriel is 32, a former star in Cuba who was seen as a hero in the country. He was heavily targeted throughout baseball with the New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers among many others showing significant interest.
Across three seasons between Japan and Cuba, Gourriel slashed .335/.417/.580 across 15 seasons, with much of his time coming as a third baseman. He should spent the first few weeks in the minor leagues as he works his way up to game shape, gets his timing down and is ready to join the Astros. It's possible he could slide over to first base if the Astros wanted to call up Bregman, but that would push Reed back to the minor leagues or Valbuena to the bench.
