Giancarlo Stanton has had his name brought up seemingly every year in trade rumors. The main reason for this is due in large part to the fact that his current team is the Miami Marlins. If he does end up being traded the question becomes where to? There have been a lot of false speculation on the possibilities of where he may wind up; but the final conclusion continues giving us two names, the Red Sox or the Dodgers.
If I was writing this article a week ago the favorite to land Stanton would have been the Dodgers. Some crazy rumors were swirling that the Dodgers would give up Yasiel Puig for slugger Stanton. For one moment here lets act like this trade has potential to happen. If you ask me the Dodgers might just be getting a steal by trading Puig for Stanton. We don’t really know how good Puig is going to be and it’s not like they would be trading for an average baseball player. They would be trading for one of the best, young right handed power bats in the game. But let’s get real here folks, this trade is NOT happening. Sorry to break it to you Marlins fans but you are not getting Puig.
Okay we have covered the Dodgers, now it is time to talk about the World Series champs. The Red Sox have been run through the rumor mill and it seems like they have a legitimate chance to trade for Stanton. They would need to offer the Marlins A LOT of big name prospects including a starting pitcher without a doubt. The Red Sox actually have a lot of good, young pitching coming through their farm system so they could definitely part ways. The main piece you could see head to Miami is stud prospect Henry Owens. He had an ERA of 2.67 last season and is a strikeout pitcher with power.
If any team were to make a big, blockbuster trade it would be the Red Sox. Think about it for a minute? They have a great big power bat in David Ortiz, but how many years does he have left? With that being said how many years does he have left of batting fourth? If they landed Stanton they would have someone who could take over the reigns of the “power bat” once Ortiz finishes his Hall of Fame career.
For now we sit and wait. The always entertaining offseason of Major League Baseball has yet to really start heating up but the time is coming soon. As the weather cools down, the MLB hot stove heats up.
