Acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, new Tampa Bay Rays infielder Matt Duffy was performing at a relatively high level for his new squad. In 20 games prior to Monday's action, Duffy was hitting .284 with one homer and seven RBI.
Unfortunately, it now appears that the infielder is lost for the season. It's being reported that he will be shut down with a pre-existing Achilles injury. For the Rays, this is likely nothing more than them taking extra precaution. The team is completely out of the playoff race in the American League, and need to make sure Duffy is prepared to make an impact next season.
Acquired from San Francisco as the principle player heading to Tampa in the Matt Moore deal, Duffy is important in the Rays' rebuilding project. The 2014 runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year award had moved to shortstop after being acquired. He's definitely someone to keep an eye on in re-draft and dyno contests moving forward. Tampa shutting him down for the season does nothing to change that.
