Mets SP Matt Harvey Out for Season with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

The New York Mets rotation was already banged up with Steven Matz pitching through elbow problems and Zack Wheeler still slowly recovering from Tommy John surgery, but now they will be without Matt Harvey for at least the next year.

On Friday, Harvey's agent Scott Boras announced Harvey would undergo season-ending surgery on his shoulder to deal with his thoracic outley syndrome. The surgery, which will be performed in St. Louis, has a history of diminishing the abilities of pitcher's abilities who have had it in the past and while progressions may have been made, Harvey's return to the mound is still very much up in the air.

This season, the Mets were not seeing the same ace-level Harvey that they were used to. Over the pass three seasons before 2016, Harvey had registered an ERA under 2.8 and a WHIP below 1.2 in each of the three seasons, but this season he had a 4.86 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 17 starts. Most concerning was the alarming spike in his BB/9 rate from 1.76 last year to 2.43 this season, while his BB% rose from 4.9 percent to 6.2 percent this season.

It's possible, if not probable, to think that the issues with his shoulder, could have led to sensitivity issues in his fingers and numbness, which would lead to a lack of ability to control the baseball. One of the symptoms of thoracic outley syndrome is reduced sensation in the fingers, muscle weakness and pain in the arm and/or shoulder.

Harvey's spot in the rotation will be taken up by Logan Verrett, who will start on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Verrett should not be on the fantasy radar right now, until he can prove he can be a successful big-league starter.
