MLB Trade Deadline Stock Watch

MLB Trade Deadline Stock Watch

The trade deadline is fast approaching and moves are being made.  Over the weekend the Los Angeles Angels made a move to fix their bullpen problems by acquiring Huston Street and a prospect for four prospects and now the New York Yankees have filled their hole at third base by acquiring Chase Headley for Yangervis Solarte and a pitching prospect.  This was the second trade the Yankees made in the last week after acquiring veteran pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks for their run at the American League East and if they are making moves the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles will have to make moves too if they are going to keep up.  Here is a look at some players who could be traded and what this price could be.

David Price - Tampa Bay Rays

All of a sudden the Rays are red hot and back into the mix.  That cuts into the value of the former Cy Young Award winner because if they can keep this up it is unlikely that he’ll be moved at all.  If the Rays bottom out this week there is a chance he could still be moves and the price will be sky high as the market has been set thanks to the Jeff Samardzija trade.  Expect the Rays to get back one major league ready player and two top prospects in return for the veteran if he is indeed moved before the deadline.

Jake Peavy - Boston Red Sox

With Price possibly off of the table the Red Sox are in prime position to get a nice prospect or two for their deadline acquisition from last season.  A struggling veteran may not seem to be in high demand, but nearly every team that is in the running for the playoffs could use help in the rotation and so far the McCarthy deal has worked out for the Yankees.  If the Sox can find a suitor to take Peavy off of their hands they should get a haul similar to what the Diamondbacks got from the Yankees, a major league ready player and a minor leaguer.

Bartolo Colon - New York Mets

The Mets overpaid for the 41-year-old veteran and now they are paying for it.  They will have a harder time dealing their veteran than the Sox will because although he could be helpful to a team in the race he makes too much, has another year left of high dollar contract and will be 42 next season.  If the Mets can deal Colon the return will be minimal if they don’t change their mind on eating some of Colon’s large contract.

Chris Denorfia - San Diego Padres

The Pardes have already moved two huge pieces but they aren’t done yet.  They won’t get a lot back for Denorfia, but there could be a surprisingly big market for him as a guy who can play every outfield position.  If Denorfia is traded they will get something similar to what the Houston Astros got last season for Justin Maxwell, one minor leaguer.

Alex Rios - Texas Rangers

Another trade deadline acquisition from 2013 that could be traded this season because of how far his team has fallen.  Unlike Peavy, Rios hasn’t underachieved to hurt his value.  Although he could be under team control for 2015 the option price is large which could cause a few teams to back off, but for a team that just wants him for the stretch run he could be a perfect fit and help bring back prospects to the Rangers in the process.  If he’s moved there will be multiple prospects in the deal and it is likely the Rangers will want a higher end pitching prospect in return to help with their pitching depth problem.

Emilio Bonifacio - Chicago Cubs

It seems like every season a team in the running makes an under the radar move for a utility man and Bonifacio could be the guy this season.  He plays nearly every infield position and can play outfield and is having a career year.  That makes him a desirable commodity for contending teams and the fact that the Cubs are virtually out of it and have a slew of middle infield depth makes him the perfect trade chip.  If Bonifacio is moved the return won’t be huge like they trades of the past for Samardzija and Matt Garza but they can get a few prospects back.
