It's not too often that we get this late into the MLB offseason and still see $100-plus million contracts being thrown around. Just a few days after the Detroit Tigers inked Justin Upton to a six-year, $132.8 million contract, another major free agent chip has dropped.
Seemingly straying away from giving him the big bucks through most of the winter, the Baltimore Orioles have re-signed Chris Davis to a whopping seven-year, $161 million contract.
Davis, 29, hit a MLB-leading 47 homers with 117 RBI's last season for the Orioles. He also led the Majors with 208 strikeouts while posting a solid .361 on-base percentage.
A career .255 hitter, Davis was said to be looking for a deal north of $200 million. While he did settle for far less than that, agent Scott Boras should be given a pat on the back here. Likely telling his client to hold out for a solid deal, patience was the virtue.
Davis will receive $17 million over the life of the contract with a total of $42 million in deferred money — $3.5 million from 2023-2032 and and $1.4 million from 2033-2037. Yes, you read that right: Baltimore will be paying Davis over the course of the next 22 years.
