Quick Look at Fantasy Baseball's Most Surprising Pitchers

Ervin Santana, Minnesota Twins

Let's preface this by indicating that Santana did pitch to a solid 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 30 starts for the Twins last season. That's pretty solid No. 2 starter production right there. Though, most figured Santana was far removed from leading a rotation like he did with the Angels so many years ago.

Through the first near two months of the season, Santana has looked like a legit ace. He's posted a 2.07 ERA to go with a tremendous 0.89 WHIP. Santana has also struck out a solid 44 batters in 61 innings. Did we mention that he boasts a 6-2 record, including a 3-0 mark with a ridiculous 0.45 ERA on the road? That's some amazing stuff right there.

Mike Leake, St. Louis Cardinals

Leake is interesting in that he seemed to have ace stuff early in his career with the Cincinnati Reds. After struggling through the latter part of his tenure in Cincinnati, Leake was traded to the San Francisco Giants during the 2015 deadline. He responded by posting an ERA of well over 4.00 in a less-than-stellar two-month tenure with the team.

Despite this, Leake signed a multi-year deal with St. Louis prior to last season. Though, he would ultimately post a 4.69 ERA while losing 12 of his 21 starts. No one expected what we would see from him thus far this season. He's put up a 2.03 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in eight starts while tallying a 4-2 record.

With a minimal production from a strikeout perspective, there's not a lot to see here when it comes to year-round leagues, but he's been a pretty big coup in DFS contests. Leake has yielded two earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts. That's tremendous stuff right there.

Jason Vargas, Kansas City Royals

It must be noted that Vargas has struggled in his past two starts, yielding a combined nine earned runs after giving up five earned in his first seven starts. That should be a concern for those looking to either pick him up off the waiver wire or add him to your DFS lineups. In reality, we're now at a point where it makes sense to take a wait-and-see approach here.

But over the course of the first near two months of the season (and in total), Vargas has been darn good. He's still pitching to a 2.30 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP. That's tremendous stuff for a dude that only appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons combined.
