Ranking the Top 10 Free agent Outfielders

The Free agent market is going to be much deeper this off-season than in years past.  Despite there not being that one clearly sought after free agent outfielder there are a ton of players in free agency that are more than capable of making a difference on whatever team signs them.  The outfield free agency crop is a seasoned one with virtually all of them being at least 30 years old.  For the right price though any one of these ball players can be the difference maker to a near championship caliber team.

1. Nelson Cruz, 2014 Stats: .271 Average, 40HR, 87 Runs, 108 RBI

After the monster season that Cruz just posted he is very likely to be the most sought after free agent outfielder.  Cruz lead baseball in homeruns with 40 and eclipsed the 100 RBI mark for the first time in his career.  He is only a career .269 hitter but if you are looking to add some pop to your lineup this the obvious choice in free agency.

He is also a solid postseason hitter, where he has a career .292 batting average and 16 homeruns in only 42 games.  The only knocks on Cruz are he is a liability on defense and last year marks only the second time in which Cruz has played in at least 130 games.

However, Cruz will be 34 next year so a decline is likely, but in the right ball park he should still be able to provide plenty of power.

2. Melky Cabrera, 2014 Stats: .301 Average, 16 HR, 81 Runs, 73 RBI

Cabrera is a very solid, and well rounded player.  He doesn’t provide you a ton of any one category, but gives you a little bit of everything.  Cabrera is a .286 career hitter with a little bit of pop and plus defense. He will only be 30 years old next year but will already be looking to play for his sixth club in 11 years in the big leagues.

With a full season, whatever team signs him can expect double digit homeruns, around 80 runs scored and 70 or more RBI depending on his spot in the order.

3)Denard Span, 2014 Stats: .302 Average, five HR, 94 Runs, 37 RBI, 31 Steals

This name is likely to fly under the radar this off-season, but Span can be a very valuable commodity to whatever team signs him.  Like most of the outfielders on this list Span is in his 30’s but will only be 31 next year.  Span isn’t your typical on base machine you would want at the top of your lineup as a .352 OBP, but he did manage to bat .302 last season and stole 31 bags.

Span also managed to score over 90 runs for the second time in his career and plays amazing defense with great range due to his above average speed.  Solid center fielders are hard to come by these days but Span is the type of player who can solidify that position.

4)Torii Hunter, 2014 Stats: .286 Average, 17 HR, 71 Runs, 83 RBI

The old man of this group at 38 years old he has likely been the most reliable of any free agent outfielder.  He still plays plus defense even at his age, and still isn’t afraid to run into walls.  The only reason he is not higher on this list is the fact that he will be 39 years old and eventually age has to catch up to you.  Hunter has batted over .300 in two of the last three seasons and has hit 16,17 and 17 homeruns during that same span.

This all coming in the very spacious Commerica Park.  If Hunter can land himself a spot in a smaller, more desirable hitters ballpark he may be able to slightly up his homeruns but expect his average to stay in the .280’s where it was last year.

5. Nick Markakis, 2014 Stats: .276 Average, 14 HR, 81 Runs, 50 RBI

6. Michael Cuddyer, 2014 Stats: .332 Average, 10 HR, 32 Runs, 31 RBI

At his age his value is really dependent on what team signs him. He has been a far more lucrative hitter in his three years as a Rockie at Coors Field where he has hit over .300 two of those three seasons.  He hasn’t played over 140 games since 2010 so health is an issue and only becomes more so in his age 36 season.

7. Alex Rios, 2014 Stats: .280 Average, four HR, 54 Runs, 54 RBI, 17 Steals

8. Mike Morse, 2014 Stats: .279 Average, 16 HR, 48 Runs, 61 RBI

9. Colby Rasmus, 2014 Stats: .225 Average, 18 HR, 45 Runs, 40 RBI

Rasmus has the type of talent that could have landed himself higher on the list.  He has above average pop for a center fielder and fields his position well.  He even has a decent OBP which approximately .70 points higher than his batting average.

The one problem is that he is a big loop in his swing which is the leading cause to his low batting average, (only a .246 career hitter).  At only 27 there is still a chance he is a late bloomer such as a Jose Bautista and he finally figures things out at the plate he could be a steal for whatever team signs him.

10. Emilio Bonifacio, 2014 Stats, .259 Average, three HR, 47 Runs, 18 RBI, 14 Steals
