In his road back from nagging elbow soreness, every step represents important progress for David Price and the Boston Red Sox. On Saturday morning, Price threw another successful bullpen session to complete the next step in his recovery from soreness that crept up early in spring training and sidelined him ever since.
Price's MRI results were cleared by doctors weeks ago and after more rest, Boston has slowly worked him up each step and monitored his progress. Saturday's bullpen session represented another successful bullpen without issue and the final step before Price can throw simulated games.
That should come later next week and if he can face live hitters and doesn't experience soreness after, Boston could send him out on a rehab assignment. Given how much time he has missed, it would certainly be a multi-start assignment for Price. He would progressively build up his pitch count and if there is no soreness, take the next step after that.
If all goes well, fantasy owners and Boston fans should feel very happy and anticipating a mid-May return for the team's second ace. Until he returns, Steven Wright will hold down a rotation spot.
