Reunions can be special and while emotionally they can provide a nostalgia that makes fans fall in love with the team bringing a player, they aren't always logical movies. Then there are rare cases where a reunion fits within a team's needs and Buster Olney's report that the San Francisco Giants have had talks with free agent Juan Uribe about a utility role.
San Francisco has a need for a utility infielder. While the starting spots are locked up, the Giants don't really have a backup plan if Brandon Crawford or Matt Duffy need rest or get injured. Not only that, but the Giants could use a power bat off the bench.
Uribe would give the Giants more flexibility, power and he adds a familiar, positive place in the clubhouse. Chemistry has been a big key to the Giants' success and Uribe was a part of that and his history shows he will continue to be a good guy in the clubhouse.
Of course, Olney added that the Giants and Uribe are far apart financially. Uribe hit 14 home runs last season in 360 at bats and had a respectable .320 on-base percentage. He should want a starting opportunity first and the Cleveland Indians have an opening and interest. Cleveland makes the most sense from an opportunity and financial perspective, but just maybe Uribe takes less to be the Giants' super utility infielder and try and win another World Series.
