Report: Mark Teixeira to Retire at End of 2016 Season

After 14 seasons in the big leagues, New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will announce on Friday that he will retire at the end of the 2016 season. The 36-year-old first baseman has battled numerous injuries this season and had a down year, which may have contributed to his decision.

So far in 2016, Teixeira has hit just 10 home runs with 27 RBIs and a .198 batting average, a year after a resurgent 2015 season when he hit 31 home runs. Teixeira is in the final year of an eight-year, $180 million deal he signed as a free agent with the Yankees back in 2008. During his eight-year tenure in New York, Teixeira won his first and only World Series with the team in 2009, was a 2x All Star and 3x Gold Glove Winner.

During his 14-year career, Teixeira spent four and a half seasons with the Texans Rangers, before he was shipped off to the Atlanta Braves midway through the 2007 season. In that deal, Atlanta sent prospects Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Beau Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, it has gone down as one of the worst deals in Atlanta's recent trade history. A year after they acquired Teixeira, they traded him to the Anaheim Angels for Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek.

Presently, Teixeira has 404 career home runs, 55th most amongst all time players and he is just one of four switch-hitters in MLB history to hit 400-plus home runs. Teixeira still has a little time left this season to surpass Duke Snider for 54th most home runs in MLB history (407) and could conceivably reach Alfonso Soriano's all-time mark of 412.
