Just a day after their divisional-rival signed free agent centerfielder B .J. Upton, the Washington Nationals have made a trade with the Minnesota Twins to acquire centerfielder Denard Span. In Span, the Nationals finally get the talented centerfielder and leadoff hitter they've coveted for quite some time.
Span solidifies the Nationals’ outfield; where he will likely be joined by 19 year old phenom Bryce Harper and 2010 free agent acquisition Jason Werth. The move may signify the end of first baseman Adam LaRoche’s time with the team, as sources say they’re far apart on contract negations. It is also likely that outfielder/first baseman Michael Morse may move permanently to first base; in hopes of keeping him healthy for more at-bats. There is always the possibility though, that the Nationals still resign LaRoche, and trade Morse for more young pitching talent.
Span is a very good leadoff hitter, who gets a lot of hits, gets on base frequently, and doesn’t strike out too often. He will be a very significant upgrade to the Nationals’ offense and defense, and comes at a very cheap price. Span is under contract for two more years for the low price of only $11.25 million total, with a $9 million club-option for 2015.
From a fantasy stand point, Span has always been a solid outfield option for your roster, and should continue to do so.
2013 Fantasy Predictions: 155-165 hits, 3 homeruns, 50-60 RBIs, 15-25 stolen bases, less than 75 strikeouts, an on-base percentage between .335-.345 and an average around .275.
