Week 6 Fantasy Baseball Surprises

Week six is coming to an end and there has been a lot of interesting findings over the past six days. Before anything let’s get everyone caught up on what has been happening in the world of baseball. The injury riddled New York Yankees have done the impossible and are now atop the AL East. This is a huge feat considering they don’t have their key factors on the field. Basically the entire AL East is tough at this point. The Orioles, Yankees and Red Sox all have at least 21 wins.

Below is the week six surprises, featuring one pitcher and two batters.

Tommy Hunter  Relief Pitcher, Baltimore Orioles

Here we have a relief pitcher; not a closer, who recorded three wins in his last three games.. This is not going to happen every week because he is a relief pitcher and just happened to get the wins. Either way, if you had him on your fantasy team for some strange reason, pat yourself on the back. You made a brilliant decision. Along with his three wins, is four strikeouts, which isn’t much but is better than nothing.

Alex Cobb  Starting Pitcher, Tampa Bay Rays

This Tampa Bay starter had a very interesting week. In two starts, he recorded a whopping 19 strikeouts, but an ERA of 4.76. He went 1-0 in those two starts and if he is on your fantasy team, racked up huge numbers for you. Sure the ERA wasn’t there for him but when you get 19 k’s along with a win, you can’t complain. The reason for his high ERA is the number of home runs he gave up this week at five. Throwing five home run balls in two games is a bad sign but the strikeouts are a great sign. So, take caution here.

Lyle Overbay  First Basemen, New York Yankees

We all heard the talk. The Yankees are done; they are old, they have too many injuries. Apparently no one told that to the new faces of the Bronx Bombers. Overbay is one of the new faces to the club and is making his name known. In his past seven games he has recorded a .364 batting average and drove in eight runs. Along with that he hit two home runs and only struck out three times. If Overbay can keep this pace up and doesn’t have any injuries he might just get more playing time than expected when Mark Teixeira comes back.
