What Pitching Dominance Means For Baseball

What Pitching Dominance Means For Baseball

The game of baseball is always evolving. We have seen it all, from dominant pitching to record-setting home run hitters. What is so interesting about this game is how far pitching has come. Up until 1991 there had only been 10 perfect games thrown in major league history. Since then, that number has skyrocketed to 21.

The most telling stat of all is looking at what happened in 2012. Philip Humber, Matt Cain and Felix Hernandez all tossed perfect games. The fact that three perfectos happened in one year is a statistical anomaly.

It is very clear that pitchers are getting better and learning more skills, at younger and younger ages. Another reason for all of this great pitching is the pitch count. Pitch counts are huge for pitchers nowadays. Managers and coaches live and die by the number of pitches being thrown. Take Stephen Strasburg for example; he was in the middle of a pennant chase, reached his pitch count limit and was done for the year.  A lot of critics disagreed with this move but the Nationals have stuck by their decision. They feel that Strasburg is such a hot commodity that they do not want to “burn him out” by the time he is thirty years old.

Overall, pitchers are getting a lot better at what they do. At the same time batters are getting better too. This means that baseball is slowly evolving into one of the most exciting games in the world. You see guy like Aroldis Chapman throwing 106 mile per hour cheddar and at the same time see guys like Giancarlo Stanton banging out homer after homer.

At the end of the day it comes down to the batter and the pitcher. It is as simple as that and that is what makes the game of baseball so beautiful.
