Angels at Athletics

Their run of consecutive victories is over, but the Oakland Athletics still have a streak they hope to extend. Oakland aims for its fourth straight series win when it hosts the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game set.

The Athletics had won 10 consecutive games before dropping a 6-4 decision to the Angels on Tuesday. Matt Olson belted a two-run homer while Ramon Laureano and Marcus Semien added solo shots for Oakland, which hasn't lost a series since falling in both contests in Seattle on May 13 and 14. The Angels managed only seven hits Tuesday, but three players recorded two apiece - including David Fletcher, who has posted three straight multi-hit performances and a total of four during its seven-game hitting streak. Tommy La Stella and Shohei Ohtani joined Fletcher with two hits and a pair of RBIs while Mike Trout was hitless in three at-bats and is 0-for-7 in the series.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Griffin Canning (2-1, 3.42 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (1-1, 3.31)

Canning has bounced back nicely from the roughest start of his brief major league career, allowing one run and six hits over 12 innings in home turns against Kansas City and Texas. The 23-year-old Californian lost his previous outing May 12, when he surrendered four runs on five hits - three homers - and four walks in 4 2/3 frames at Baltimore. Canning won his only other road start, allowing two runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings in Detroit five days earlier.

Mengden will be making his fourth start of the season after a no-decision against Seattle on Friday in which he allowed one run on five hits and five walks over four innings. The 26-year-old Texan was superb in his previous outing, giving up one run and three hits over seven frames in a victory at Detroit on May 18. Mengden has yet to defeat the Angels in his career as he is 0-2 with an 8.84 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance.
