Giants at Mets

The San Francisco Giants closed out the month of May by losing eight of nine games as their pitching staff was ravaged for 73 runs but they have turned things around since the calendar flipped to June. Visiting San Francisco will be seeking a season-high fourth consecutive victory when it continues a three-game series against the sliding New York Mets on Wednesday night.

Stephen Vogt ended a 17-game RBI drought with a tiebreaking two-run double and Pablo Sandoval added a two-RBI double in a six-run 10th inning to help Bruce Bochy become the second manager in franchise history to win 1,000 games. Brandon Belt forced extra innings with a tying RBI double and has hit safely in 10 straight contests for San Francisco, which has outscored the opposition 25-6 during its three-game winning streak. New York's bullpen compiled an 11.65 ERA on its recently concluded road trip and was torched for six runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings in the team's sixth loss in eight games. Catcher Wilson Ramos homered among three hits for the Mets and is 16-for-39 with five homers and 10 RBIs over his last 11 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tyler Beede (0-1, 7.82 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jason Vargas (1-3, 4.46)

Beede remains in search of the first win of his brief career, but he is coming off his longest start with six strong innings of one-run ball in a no-decision at the Miami Marlins on Thursday. It marked the first time in six appearances (four starts) that the former first-round pick pitched beyond four innings and was a dramatic improvement from his only other start this season, when he was hammered for eight runs over 2 1/3 innings at Cincinnati. Opponents are 9-for-24 with runners in scoring position.

Vargas was a hard-luck loser at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday despite turning in his best effort of the year, permitting one run and six hits over six innings while remaining winless since his season debut. It marked the fifth time in his last six turns that he has allowed one run or less, but the 36-year-old is 0-3 during that span while failing to pitch beyond 5 1/3 innings five times. Vargas last faced the Giants during the 2017 season, winning both his starts and posting an 0.64 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 1B Pete Alonso became the second rookie in franchise history to hit 20 homers, trailing only Darryl Strawberry (26).

2. Giants C Buster Posey (hamstring) sat out his second straight game but could return to the lineup Wednesday.

3. Mets OF Michael Conforto is 6-for-36 since returning from a concussion.
