Mariners at Astros

The Houston Astros are in a funk and not even the friendly confines of Minute Maid Park are helping these days as they prepare to host the Seattle Mariners on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. Houston lost its last two games by a combined 24-2 to Pittsburgh, absorbing its first home series loss of the season (9-1-3) and seeing its lead in the American League West shrink to 4 1/2 games over Texas.

The Astros have lost nine of their last 11 games and also saw rookie phenom Yordan Alvarez, who has seven home runs and 18 RBIs in his first 15 major league games, leave Thursday's contest with left knee discomfort on his 22nd birthday. Seattle lost for only the second time in its last eight games with Thursday's 4-2 setback at Milwaukee while averaging 6.8 runs during that span. Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager (hand) missed his second straight game Thursday with manager Scott Servais telling reporters: "For me, there's no reason to rush him back for a day game after a night game. ... We'll see how he is over in Houston. ..." Houston's Wade Miley tries to return to his winning ways Friday after allowing more than three runs for only the second time this season and opposes Tommy Milone, who will follow an opener.
