Yankees at Mets
The New York Yankees hammered the ball all over the park during their two-game trip to London, but they looked like a very different team upon return to the Big Apple. The Yankees will try to rebound from a rare offensive letdown and salvage the finale of a two-game set at the city rival Mets on Wednesday.
The Bronx Bombers, who scored 29 runs in their two-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox in London over the weekend, saw their major league-record home run streak snapped at 31 games while managing just six hits in Tuesday's 4-2 loss at Citi Field. J.D. Davis homered and hit an RBI double to forge a 2-2 tie and Michael Conforto's two-run double in the eighth made the difference as the Mets snapped the Yankees' five-game winning streak. Domingo German was tied for the major league lead in wins when he was put on the injured list in early June and he'll make his return to start Wednesday for the Yankees. The Mets counter with veteran Jason Vargas as they seek their first three-game winning streak since a four-gamer from May 20-23.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Domingo German (9-2, 3.86 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jason Vargas (3-3, 3.66)
German went 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA in three starts prior to hitting the injured list. The Dominican Republic native struggled over 3 2/3 innings in his last matchup with the Mets nearly a year ago at home, but he led the Yankees to a win at Citi Field earlier in that season with six innings of three-run ball. German has a 5.42 ERA in his career on the road and a 6.00 mark in interleague play.
Vargas struck out a career-high 10 batters while allowing two runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings at Philadelphia last Wednesday. He settled for a no-decision in that one and finished June at 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts. One of those June outings resulted in a win in a quality start at Yankee Stadium, which left the 36-year-old with a 1-7 record and a 6.59 ERA in his career versus the Yankees.
