Tigers at Angels

The Detroit Tigers look to post back-to-back victories for the first time snce the end of May when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Monday for the second contest of their four-game series. Detroit recorded a series-opening 7-2 triumph on Monday, ending its losing streak at six games.

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs while Jordy Mercer also went deep for the Tigers, who improved to 4-19 this month. The 36-year-old Cabrera, who had gone 11 games without driving in a run, is tied with Johnny Damon for 54th place on the all-time list with 2,769 career hits. Kole Calhoun belted his 24th homer of the season for Los Angeles, which fell to 1-4 on its seven-game homestand. The 31-year-old outfielder has been swinging a hot bat of late, going 9-for-29 with three home runs and eight RBIs over his last six contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Drew VerHagen (1-1, 14.40 ERA) vs. Angels RH Griffin Canning (3-6, 5.15)

After making 10 relief appearances earlier this season, VerHagen struggled in his first start of 2019 as he surrendered seven runs - six earned - on six hits and four walks over four innings in a loss at Seattle on Thursday. The 28-year-old Texan hadn't pitched for Detroit since May 4, when he was pounded by Kansas City for six runs on five hits and three walks in one frame of relief. VerHagen has made two appearances out of the bullpen against the Angels in his career, allowing three runs over 3 2/3 innings.

Canning made his first major-league relief appearance on Thursday and was tagged by Baltimore for five runs and five hits over two innings en route to the loss in a 16-inning contest. The 23-year-old rookie from California hasn't started since July 20, when he settled for a no-decision in Seattle after giving up two runs and four hits over five frames. Canning made his first career start versus the Tigers on May 7 and picked up the win after allowing two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 frames at Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers RF Nicholas Castellanos returned to the lineup in the series opener after missing Sunday's game at Seattle with an abdominal cramp and went 0-for-4 with a run.

2. Los Angeles recalled LHP Adam McCreery from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned RHP Luke Bard to the Bees.

3. Detroit LF Christin Stewart extended his hitting streak to seven games in the fourth inning on Monday with an RBI double but exited the contest a frame later after crashing into the outfield wall.
