Mariners at Tigers

The Seattle Mariners snapped out of a funk with a four-game sweep of Detroit last month and halted another slump with a return matchup against the Tigers on Tuesday. The Mariners have won eight in a row in the series with Detroit and are 5-0 this season entering the second of a three-game series against the Tigers on Wednesday night at Comerica Park.

Kyle Seager has made himself at home against Detroit, belting three homers and driving in six runs in Tuesday's 11-6 win to extend his hitting streak to seven games overall and five against the Tigers. Seager, who went back-to-back twice with Tom Murphy as Seattle erased a three-run deficit, boosted his career totals to seven homers and 19 RBIs in 21 games at Comerica Park. While the Mariners won for only the second time in 10 games, Detroit dipped to 7-24 since the All-Star break and fell to a major league-worst 16-42 at home. Catcher Jake Rogers homered for the third time in six games and fellow rookie Travis Demeritte is riding a seven-game hitting streak for the Tigers.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (12-9, 4.25 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Edwin Jackson (2-5, 9.35)

Gonzalez settled for a no-decision last time out against Tampa Bay despite matching his season high with nine strikeouts and limiting the Rays to a pair of runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings in his fifth straight quality start at home. He dominated the Tigers on July 27, permitting one run on six hits while striking out eight over seven innings. Gonzales is 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA against Detroit and has split 10 decisions with a 3.88 ERA on the road this year.

Jackson will try to avoid following the same path as with Toronto earlier this season, when he won his debut before getting battered in losing each of his next four starts before he eventually was released. The 35-year-old journeyman, who has played for a record 14 different teams (including a previous stint with the Tigers), won his Detroit debut Friday by allowing one run over 6 1/3 innings. Domingo Santana has a pair of homers in four at-bats off Jackson.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit has surrendered 103 homers at Comerica -- only five shy of the stadium record set in 2017.

2. Mariners RHP Brandon Brennan exited Tuesday's game after throwing only two pitches.

3. Tigers LHP Blaine Hardy will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection that is expected to end his season.
