Padres at Giants

The San Francisco Giants surprised many by climbing into the National League postseason race, but they are sliding right back out of it. San Francisco attempts to avoid a fourth consecutive setback when it hosts the San Diego Padres on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series.

The Giants dropped a 5-3 decision in Thursday's opener to fall seven games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild-card spot. Brandon Belt hit a solo homer and Stephen Vogt recorded an RBI double for San Francisco, which is 0-3 on its six-game homestand and has lost four straight overall at Oracle Park. Manuel Margot and Austin Hedges launched two-run homers for the Padres, who had lost six of their previous eight contests. Hedges' blast was his first hit since going 4-for-4 at Philadelphia on Aug. 18, ending a six-game drought during which he went 0-for-12.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Dinelson Lamet (2-2, 4.30 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (8-8, 3.71)

Lamet is riding a seven-start unbeaten streak but has registered only two victories in that span - both on the road. The 27-year-old Dominican, who has made nine starts since returning from Tommy John surgery, escaped with a no-decision against Boston on Saturday after yielding four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. Lamet made his only career start versus the Giants on July 23, 2017, recording the win after allowing two runs over 6 2/3 frames in San Francisco.

Bumgarner is coming off a no-decision at Oakland on Saturday in which he gave up two runs and four hits over five innings. The 30-year-old native of North Carolina has posted a 2.95 ERA at home as opposed to a 4.68 mark on the road and gone 4-0 in his last eight turns at Oracle Park. Bumgarner is 12-10 with three complete games, one shutout and a 3.47 ERA in 34 starts and one relief appearance versus San Diego but has surrendered 11 runs over 20 frames while going 1-1 in three turns this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres 3B Manny Machado went 0-for-4 on Thursday, marking just the third time in his last 13 games he was held without a hit.

2. Vogt has been driving in runs at a solid pace of late, registering nine over his last seven contests.

3. San Diego recalled OF Nick Martini, who was claimed off waivers from Oakland on Wednesday and sent to Triple-A El Paso, and optioned RHP Trey Wingenter to Double-A Amarillo.
