Angels' Heaney throws one-hitter against Royals

Andrew Heaney celebrated his 27th birthday by throwing a one-hit shutout for the Los Angeles Angels in a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The only hit Heaney allowed was a one-out single by Hunter Dozier in the fifth inning. The only other baserunners the Royals had came when Jon Jay was hit by a pitch leading off the first inning and Jorge Soler walked with two outs in the seventh.

After the walk to Soler, Heaney retired the final seven batters to finish it off.

It was his first career shutout and the first one-hit shutout by an Angels pitcher since Ervin Santana had one in 2012.

Heaney threw 105 pitches through eight innings, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia allowed him to go out for the ninth. The left-hander needed 11 more pitches to complete the game. Heaney (3-4) struck out four.

The Angels also didn't put together much offense against Royals starter Brad Keller and the Kansas City bullpen.

Los Angeles scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning after Chris Young and Michael Hermosillo singled with one out.

When Ian Kinsler flied out for the second out of the inning, Young tagged up and went to third. That spelled the end of the night for Keller, Royals manager Ned Yost bringing in Kevin McCarthy to face Jefry Marte.

With Marte at the plate, Hermosillo broke for second, drawing a throw. With Hermosillo in a rundown, Young took off for home and scored.

The Angels finished with seven hits, including three by Justin Upton.

Despite the win, it was not a perfect night for the Angels, who lost shortstop Andrelton Simmons to a sprained right ankle. Simmons rolled over the ankle before the game going down the dugout steps, but he stayed in the lineup.

He walked in the first inning but was limping noticeably and was taken out of the game in the second inning.
