Manaea goes six strong as A's sweep Tigers

Sean Manaea overcame an early homer to pitch six strong innings and red-hot Jed Lowrie had two more hits as the Oakland Athletics completed a four-game road sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.

Manaea (8-6) allowed two runs on five hits in Oakland's 10th win in its last 12 games. A trio of relievers followed him, and Blake Treinen notched his 20th save by getting the last three outs.

Lowrie had nine hits in the series, five for extra-bases, and drove in five runs.

Chad Pinder supplied two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Stephen Piscotty had two hits and a run scored. Mark Canha and Khris Davis also drove in runs for Oakland, which has surged to six games over .500 during its hot streak.

The A's have won nine straight against Detroit.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who have lost nine straight. John Hicks added two hits.

Michael Fulmer (3-7) allowed four runs on nine hits over eight innings while recording five strikeouts. Fulmer became the first Tigers pitcher to go at least eight innings since Francisco Liriano on May 20.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the first on Castellanos' 11th homer. Jeimer Candelario drew a leadoff walk and, one out later, Castellanos drilled an opposite-field shot.

The A's pecked away at Fulmer and scored three runs in the third. Oakland had five singles in the inning, with Canha driving in the first run on a bloop to right. Lowrie followed with his eighth hit in the series to tie the game, and Davis made it 3-2 by slapping a hit to center.

Oakland added a run the next inning. Piscotty reached on a leadoff single, and Pinder ripped a 2-2 pitch to deep center for a run-scoring double.

Detroit loaded the bases in the sixth on a trio of two-out singles, but Manaea responded by striking out Niko Goodrum.
