After six straight victories on the regional scene, light heavyweight fighter Anthony Johnson has earned himself a new UFC contract and a high-profile matchup on April’s pay-per-view.
The UFC announced on their official website on Tuesday that “Rumble” will face off with the no. 4 light heavyweight, according to the UFC’s official rankings, Phil Davis.
Johnson was cut from the world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization after missing weight by a whopping 12 pounds in what was scheduled for a middleweight bout against Vitor Belfort at UFC 142 in January 2012.
This was the third time Johnson missed weight in 11 contests inside the Octagon.
The Blackzilians team member, who somehow managed to make the welterweight limit of 170 pounds, has reinvented himself as a light heavyweight, showcasing dynamic striking and excellent takedown defense.
Furthermore, four of his six wins on the regional scene came by way of knockout.
Johnson’s contract with World Series of Fighting expired after a vicious one-punch knockout over Mike Kyle at WSOF 8 about two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, ex-Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold is fresh off a rarely-seen body kick knockout over Costa Philippou at UFC Fight Night 35 last month and will next meet Tim Boetsch at UFC 172, UFC.com also reported on Tuesday.
Rockhold has won 10 of his past 11 fights and is the no. 6 middleweight in the world according to the UFC’s official rankings.
He squares off with the always game “Barbarian,” who has won five of his past seven bouts, though is just 1-2 in his past three fights.
Boetsch, the no. 11 middleweight in the UFC’s rankings, most recently won a debatable split decision over C.B. Dollaway at UFC 166 in October.
Rockhold was originally set to face Boetsch on that card, but Rockhold withdrew from the matchup due to a knee injury.
UFC 172 takes place at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland and is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira.
