Former WWE heavyweight champion CM Punk continues to make headlines after signing a UFC contract three weeks ago, now recently stating he would fight MMA legend Anderson Silva under the right circumstances.
Appearing on Michael Landsberg’s Off The Record show on Thursday, Punk, who real name is Phil Brooks, said he’s square off with “The Spider” if the payday was right (transcription per MMA Fighting).
“Who I fight isn't 100% up to me. I don't think it's 100% up to any fighter. That's what the Joe Silva's of the world are for. Would I fight Nate Diaz? This is where he takes it out of context,” Punk said.
“Yea, I would fight anybody given the proper time to prepare for it. Would that be a wise decision at this juncture in my career? Probably not. But I would also fight Anderson Silva tomorrow if you paid me the corect amount of money to do so."
Punk, who has never fought professionally before and doesn’t have a background in any combat sports such as wrestling, boxing or Muay Thai, would probably be lucky to walk back to the locker room under his own power if he stepped into the Octagon with Silva.
Silva, 33-6, did not fight in 2014 after suffering a horrific broken leg against champ Chris Weidman at UFC 168 one year ago.
Despite losing the title to “The All-American” at UFC 162 last July and coming up short in the rematch, Silva has set just about every UFC record imaginable during his UFC title run between October 2006 and July 2013.
During that time frame, Silva won 17 fights in a row (15 finishes), recorded 12 “Fight Night” bonuses and notched a 10 consecutive successful title defenses.
Although Punk will likely compete as a middleweight, a showdown with Silva is most likely impossible since both the New Jersey and Nevada State Athletic Commissions indicated that Punk would not get licensed to compete against someone with significantly more experience than him.
