Former WWE heavyweight champion CM Punk wrestled his last match at Royal Rumble in January, which is just as well now that he’s signed a UFC contract.
However, the New Jersey and Nevada State Athletic Commissions told FOX Sports that for Punk, 36, whose real name is Phil Brooks, to get licensed he’d have to be booked against an opponent with little to no experience in combat sports.
"We would really have to look at this very closely," said Larry Hazard, the Executive Director of the NJAC.
"We would have to take a close look at it. Normally, we require some type of background as either an amateur or a professional. This would certainly raise a red flag."
His counterpart at the NSAC, Bob Bennett, noted that “the matchup would matter a great deal” on whether or not Punk would be granted a fighter’s license.
The UFC announced that they signed Punk to a multi-fight deal at UFC 181 on Saturday, with the Brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt noting that he may take as many as six months of uninterrupted training before it’s time to walk to the Octagon on fight night.
UFC President Dana White admitted at the post-fight press conference that he is skeptical of Punk’s fighting skills, but noted that the only way to find out if someone can fight is to put them in the cage.
ESPN analyst/retired UFC fighter Chael Sonnen recently told MMA Mania that he knows who Punk will fight in his UFC debut and is a competitor already known by fans.
