UFC News: Josh Barnett Officially Declines UFC Contract Offer

Looks like “The Warmaster” may never return to the Octagon even though Strikeforce met its demise last month.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett has declined an offer from the company, according to his manager, Leland LaBarre. MMA Junkie first reported that negations hit a snag before MMA Fighting confirmed that Barnett had turned the contract down.

"We agreed on guaranteed compensation," LaBarre told MMA Fighting. "In fact, we never even countered. We accepted their original offer … However, there are some outlying issues - one in particular - that as of this point we were unable to agree on."

Barnett has won nine of his past 10 fights, with his sole defeat being a lop-sided decision loss to Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier.

The catch wrestling specialist hasn’t fought in the UFC in nearly a decade, capturing the heavyweight title from Randy Couture at UFC 36 in March 2002.

However, the victory was compromised by the fact that Barnett tested positive for steroids after the fight and was released from his contract shortly afterwards.

"We've had a discussion with every major organization you've heard of and some you haven't," LaBarre told MMA Junkie, indicating the UFC wasn’t the only option for his client.

UFC officials did not give a statement to either MMA media outlet, though UFC president Dana White did confirm to MMA Junkie the company was negotiating with Barnett.
