UFC Signs Former WWE Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, Will Make Debut in 2015

In an unprecedented move, the UFC signed a fighter with no experience in the cage, nor any credentials on the mat as a wrestler or jiu-jitsu competitor. As a matter of fact, this man hasn’t even taken a trip or two inside the boxing ring.

At UFC 181, the world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization announced the signing of former WWE heavyweight champion CM Punk, 36, whose real name is Phil Brooks.

Punk made the announcement alongside UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, with the UFC later uploading a Vine video of Punk saying “See you in 2015.”

In an interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, Punk said he’s been considering stepping inside the cage for a bout a year, since a falling out with the WWE about a year ago.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt under Rener Gracie, Punk added that he’s unsure of which fight camp he will train at for his first bout and while he is tentatively considering competing at middleweight, he hasn’t ruled out testing out the waters at welterweight.

UFC President Dana White admitted in a separate interview with Helwani that he was “skeptical” of what Punk could do inside the Octagon, but also said “you don’t know if a guy can fight unless he fights.”

Punk is expected to spend a good part of next year on just rigorous training, and therefore, isn’t expected to make his UFC debut any earlier than this summer.

The Chicago native recently made headlines when he slammed his former boss, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, on two separate Colt Cabana podcasts, claiming he was fired on his wedding day - among other bold accusations.
