The Cleveland Cavaliers have been on the clock since May 20th when they procured the top pick in the Entry Draft by leapfrogging from their projected ninth draft spot to the top of the draft board. Ever since then the Cavalier’s braintrust have been assessing talent and weighing trade options.
As draft day approaches it would appear that the Cavs are set to use their pick as opposed to trading away a potential superstar in the making. Rumours have been rampant consisting of potential trade partners and scenarios that would net the Cavs a serviceable swingman and various draft picks for the top pick. Despite owner Dan Gilbert’s desire to bring playoff basketball now to Cleveland; pulling the trigger on such a deal might just be an overly anxious knee jerk reaction to the situation.
Again this is all just unconfirmed conjecture at this point, but it is believed through multiple reports that the Orlando Magic have offered their 4rth and 12th pick in this year’s draft along with swingman Arron Afflalo for Cleveland’s top pick. If this is truly the best offer on the table then it is an intriguing one that does merit consideration, but in the end I think it is turned away. Only way this trade works is if Gilbert and General Manager David Griffin are 100% sold on Joel Embiid and are similarly committed to holding Embiid out of basketball activities for the entire season. This kind of logic seems to contravene Gilbert’s win now attitude, but if they love Embiid that much then anything could be possible here.
It was rumoured and it has been all but confirmed by general manager David Griffin that the team was prepared to take Joel Embiid with the top pick. Obviously that decision has been rethought now that the injury news has been confirmed and surgery completed. Now that Embiid is out of play as the first pick it clearly leaves Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker as the remaining viable options should the Cavaliers keep the pick.
Not that Wiggins and Parker are playing second fiddle to anyone but it does now force a real decision to be made, a decision that could cost jobs and potentially change the face of a franchise.
Biggest Draft Day Need:
Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, their biggest draft day need isn't going to get addressed here with this top pick. There was a decent chance of this happening but once Embiid's injury came to light there was no other suitable power forward or center that was worthy of such a lofty draft slot. Instead the Cavaliers will have to settle on a replacement for the soon to be departed Luol Deng. Luckily enough two very suitable and capable players are here for the choosing.
The Cavaliers are working hard right now to keep the smokescreen a going and in the process try to create some intrigue here come draft day. I for one have no doubt that the Cav's inner circle has made their decision and are just continuing to play their cards close to their chest in case a trade proposal completely blows their hair back.
The Cavaliers are poised to make history here as they will draft the former Kansas Jayhawk and Canadian hoopster Andrew Wiggins. This would of course mark the first time in league history that two Canadians have been selected first overall in consecutive years, but more to the point of bettering one's team; this is absolutely the right name to call here.
Not only does Wiggins have a ridiculous upside as a player but he is extremely marketable for the franchise and while Dan Gilbert wants to win at all costs he is a savvy business man who knows a successful start-up when he sees it. Gilbert knows investments and dividends from his days as a young entrepreneur and he must see that drafting Wiggins is an investment with an immense upside that he simply can't pass up.
Not only will Wiggins bring general notoriety to Cleveland basketball but he will get the team on television, sponsors will flock to the club and media coverage will undoubtedly increase. Nike is going to come back to Cleveland with a marketing campaign that will rival that of the departed LeBron James. With Wiggins on board they will once again have that marquee player that will attract crowds, sell tickets, generate revenue and hopefully win some games.
A further upside to taking Wiggins here is that he just might be able to help in salvaging last year’s top draft pick Anthony Bennett from the depths of potential lottery busts. Anthony and Wiggins have played together for Team Canada and they have a familiarity and bond that goes back to their high school days. This extra bit of familiarity could serve as a motivator to Bennett as everyone hopes to see him rebound from a disappointing rookie campaign.
