NBA Player Profile: Steph Curry

Stephen Curry is one of the top point guards in the league today. He is known for his scoring ability and his ridiculous talent for shooting three pointers.

Early Life

Curry was born in Akron, Ohio on March 14, 1988 of Dell and Sonya Curry. Dell Curry was a former NBA player who played a total of 16 years. Steph’s mother, Sonya, was a volleyball star. Curry comes from a great lineage of athletes and he was certainly blessed with natural ability.

Even though he was born and lived in Akron, Curry attended Charlotte Christian School for high school. In high school Curry received many awards and recognition including all conference, all state, and here state playoff appearances.  Curry was certainly talented in high school, as he shot over 48 perfect from there his senior year. Despite his accolades, Curry was not highly recruited.

Curry had hoped to attend his father’s alma mater, Virginia Tech, but they would not offer him a scholarship. Curry received offers from Davidson, VCU, and Winthrop, and he eventually accepted the offer from Davidson. Davidson had not been a very successful team, as they had not won an NCAA Tournament game in over 30 years. Heading into college Curry was rated as a three star point guard. Standing at just 6’2” and 163 pounds, Curry lacked elite level size.

College Career

Curry was a star the second he stepped on the court for Davidson. In his second career game against the University of Michigan, Curry scored 32 points and pulled down nine boards. Curry led Davidson to a 29-5 record and a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Curry averaged 21 points a game his freshman year and was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and was named to the Freshman All-American team. In his second season Curry had even greater success, leading Davidson to a record of 26-6. Curry also increased his averages to 25 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Davidson once again made the NCAA Tournament, this time as a 10 seed.

Davidson faced Gonzaga in the first round and managed to comeback from an 11 point deficit to win 82-76. This marked Davidson’s first tournament win since 1969. In the second round Davidson faced the number two seed Georgetown. Despite being heavy underdogs, Curry led Davidson to a shocking 74-70 win.

Curry followed up this win with another upset victory over the third seeded Wisconsin. Curry managed to score over 30 points in all these victories, making him only the fourth person to achieve this. In the Elite 8 Davidson faced the top seed Kansas Jayhawks, who eventually beat them 59-57. Amid much speculation, Curry decided to stay for his junior year in an attempt to further develop his game.

Despite the advances in his personal game, Davidson failed to make much improvement as they finished with a record of 28-6 and failed to make the NCAA Tournament. Davidson eventually fell in the second round of the NIT Tournament to St. Mary’s. In his junior year Curry led the NCAA in scoring, averaging 28 points. He was also named a 2009 first team All-American and a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award.

Following his junior year, Curry decided to forgo his final season and enter the NBA Draft. Curry finished his career with 2,488 points, making him the highest scorer in Davidson history. He also set records for most three pointers in Davidson history with 441 and most three pointers in a single season with 162.

NBA Career

In the 2009 NBA Draft Curry was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Golden State Warriors. Curry was very successful in his rookie season, averaging 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists. He was also named to the 2010 All-Rookie First team and finished second behind Tyreke Evans in Rookie of the Year voting.

Curry’s second season was equally as successful, averaging 18 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Curry also proceeded to miss eight games with ankle injuries. Before the start of his third season Curry rehabbed extensively on his ankle in hopes of repairing torn ligaments.

Unfortunately, before the season started, Curry reinjured his ankle causing him to miss games throughout the season. He ended up missing forty games and averaged only 15 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Despite his chronic ankle injuries, Curry signed a four year $44 million contract. In the 2013 season Curry had a breakout year, averaging 23 points, seven assists, and four rebounds.

The Warriors also managed to secure the sixth seed in the West. The Warriors then managed to beat the third seeded Denver Nuggets in six games, advancing them to the second round of the playoffs. The Warriors fell to the Spurs in six games in the second round. In the 2013-2014 season, Curry has averaged 23 points and nearly 10 assists per game and has led the Warriors to a 22-13 record.
