NBA Preview - Brooklyn Nets

2014-15 Review
The Brooklyn Nets regressed last year as they slid down to third in the Atlantic Division win a 38-44 record on the year. Brooklyn just did barely make the playoffs by virtue of having one more win that the ailing Miami Heat. Brooklyn went through a season of turmoil as roster changes and rumours of personnel issues continued to plague the Nets. The Nets did try to remedy their financial and luxury tax woes; however, only so much could be done in a season and the lack of payroll flexibility certainly hurt the Nets come season's end.

New Additions
Andrea Bargnani

The Brooklyn Nets signed the much maligned Bargnani to a free-agent deal this offseason. Bargnani had been linked to a handful of teams, yet he settled on Brooklyn in the end. Bargnani is a serviceable player who can certainly contribute to a team in some capacity. He most certainly wasn't worth the money that the New York Knicks were paying him; however, he comes to Brooklyn on a very team friendly contract. With both Thaddeus Young and Brook Lopez already in the roster it remains to be seen what Bargnani's role will be and just what his minutes will look like.

Key Losses
Deron Williams

It is tough to really call Williams a key loss inasmuch as the Nets wanted no part of Williams moving forward and they went so far as to buy him out of his remaining contract year. The loss of Williams at point leaves the veteran Jarrett Jack as the starter entering the season. Williams was signed by Dallas where he hopes to resurrect his career.

Biggest Strength
Young and Lopez

The pairing of Young and Lopez in the paint will continue to cause matchup problems for many teams. This duo is an effective pairing as both guys move well without the ball and they seem to understand floor spacing. They both rebound well and both contribute without cannibalizing each other's stats.

Biggest Weakness
Roster Depth

Given the constraints on the Nets roster in the previous seasons, it stands to reason that the depth on the roster has been lacking for quite some time. The starting five here just aren't good enough nor young enough to maintain prolonged minutes throughout the season. The lack of roster depth will cause significant problems sooner rather than later for the Nets as younger and more athletic teams will look to push the pace and run against this team.

Bottom Line
The Brooklyn Nets will be very hard pressed to make the playoffs this season as they barely eked in last year. Brooklyn could very well make a run for second place in this division; however, that still won't be good enough to procure a playoff spot. The true bright spot on this roster is Brook Lopez and unfortunately he is surrounded by spare parts that truly don't amount to much.

Fantasy Slant

Most Overrated
Joe Johnson

There is little doubt that Joe Johnson is a mere shadow of his former self and despite the name recognition he isn't worth more than a fraction of his previous value. Last season Johnson averaged a mere 14.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 3.7 apg while playing in and starting 80 games for the Nets. The only reason that Johnson's stats are even this inflated is because he plays for the woeful Nets who lack offensive talents. Johnson is easily one of the most overrated fantasy players entering this season and he really must be avoided in all formats.

Most Underrated
Bojan Bogdanovic

Bojan just started coming into his own as an NBA rookie at the tail end of last year. He finally proved his worth and was able to get some consistent minutes. Once the minutes were solidified, Bojan actually started producing. FanDuel had long been pricing Bogdanovic near the bottom of the pile for shooting guards which was appropriate to start the season; however, once Bojan got himself acclimated the production went up nicely while the price stayed down.

Biggest Surprise
Jarrett Jack

When Jack filled in as the starter in Brooklyn he performed magnificently at times. Now that he is the everyday starter entering the season he should be able to duplicate some of those fantastic stat-stuffing fantasy nights. Jack certainly isn't that sexy fantasy option; however, as a PG2 option he is a very good value.
