NBA free agency is finally in full swing now that both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have made their decisions. Within the next few weeks there will be a flurry signings. However, free agent signings aren't the only moves that will be made this off-season Trades, as always, will be a large role in shaping teams this off-season.
While some trades happen suddenly and unexpectedly, most trades develop over time and revolve around certain players. The players on the trade block are on there for numerous reasons, however; a majority are there for cap purposes. Here are some of the top players still on the trade block.
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Love's name has been at the forefront of all trade rumors for months now. The disgruntled all-star is unhappy in Minnesota and wants out. With the top tier free agents signed, Love remains the one big fish still available to teams. Not only is he the best player on the trading block, he is one of the best players in the NBA.
Many teams have reported interest in trading for Love, but only a select few have a real chance too. Originally Love stated he would not resign in Cleveland, however; with the addition of LeBron James he is much more open to the idea. The Cavaliers certainly have the pieces to acquire Love, it will come down to the Timberwolves agreeing to an offer.
Carlos Boozer, Chicago Bulls
After a successful 12-year career playing for Cleveland, Utah, and Chicago; Boozer is at the end of his career. He has struggled to stay on the court and has become an inefficient player. He also is owed a large some of salary, $16.8 million to be exact. If he is not traded then he is a great candidate to be amnestied. As an expiring contract, Boozer does have some appeal. Plus, he is nearly useless with the emergence of Taj Gibson and the arrival of Nikola Mirotic.
Amar'e Stoudemire, New York Knicks
With the return of Carmelo, the Knicks may be looking to free up some cap room and upgrade their roster. Trading Stoudemire would be a great step in the right direction. With a $23 million salary, Stoudemire would be a massive salary dump for the Knicks. Much like Boozer, Stoudemire is at the end of his career, but could be a good option for his expiring contract.
Jason Thompson, Sacramento Kings
There are reports in Sacramento that nearly every player is available for the right price. Understandably, the Kings might have difficulty getting rid of Thompson. Throughout his six year career he has averaged 10 points and seven rebounds. He does not do anything particularly well, but is an average scorer, rebounder, and defender. Despite his short comings, he is set to be paid $18 million over the next three years. Look for the Kings to try and move his contract to a team with cap flexibility and a hole up front.
Eric Bledsoe, Phoenix Suns
Bledsoe is coming off a career year in his first year as a starter. He is also a restricted free agent and there have been talks of him receiving a max contract this off-season The Suns already had a very deep back court, and the addition of Isaiah Thomas only adds to that depth. However, the Suns have been strong candidates to land Kevin Love, but doing so would require them to ship out Bledsoe. Also, is the Suns are unwilling to match a max contract, they could resort to a sign and trade.
Thaddeus Young, Philadelphia 76ers
Coming off his best year as a pro, Young's name has been one of the most common among trade rumors. With an expiring contract of $9.7 million and a versatile skill set, Young could be a welcome addition for many teams. The 76ers have made it clear they are looking to rebuild long term and Young simply does not fit into their plans.
Steve Nash, Los Angeles Lakers
Nash is another veteran who is at the end of his career and is on an expiring contract. The former MVP has seen better days, and has struggled mightily to stay healthy. It's clear that the Lakers won't be contenders this year and it may be in their best interest to dump Nash's salary. There were reports that he could be packaged in a deal, however his value is very low at this point.
