Kemba Walker scored a career-high 30 points as host Charlotte held on and won the debut of new coach Mike Dunlap.
Gerald Henderson added 18 points for the Bobcats, who ended last season with 23 straight losses and won their first game since March 17. Ramon Sessions chipped in 11, including the go-ahead basket with just under five minutes remaining.
Lance Stephenson and Tyler Hansbrough led the Pacers with 15 points apiece. David West struggled from the floor, going 7-of-17 for 14 points.
The Bobcats led by five going into the fourth and then held off the Pacers, who won with two seconds left Wednesday in Toronto.
Paul George had a layup blocked while the Pacers committed a shot-clock violation but they still had a chance when Walker missed a jumper. However, point guard D.J. Augustin missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Indiana's Danny Granger remained sidelined with a sore left knee. .... Rookie Michael-Kidd Gilchrist started for Charlotte and scored two points on 1-for-7 from the field. ...Augustin scored three points on 1-of-7 from the floor in his return to Charlotte.
