Chargers CB Jason Verrett (Knee) to Miss Rest of Season

The Los Angeles Chargers received a significant blow to their secondary on Saturday. Cornerback Jason Verrett, Los Angeles' top cornerback, will undergo knee surgery in the coming days and will miss the remainder of the 2017 season. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news on Twitter.

Verrett, 26, absence deals a massive blow to Los Angeles' secondary. While Casey Hayward remains one of the NFL's best, young cornerbacks and can match up well with opposing teams' top receivers, the Chargers now must turn to Trevor Williams as their second cornerback on the outside. Williams, an undrafted free agent in 2016, saw action in 12 games last season and recorded five pass deflections.

Knee surgery is another blow for Verrett, who missed 12 games last season and appeared in just 25 games through the first four seasons of his career. After the Chargers picked up Verrett's fifth-year option in May, Verrett now must rehab from knee surgery and hope he can stay healthy and produce in the 2018 season. One of the most talented cornerbacks in the game, 2018 could prove to be a make or break year for Verrett's pursuit of landing a significant payday.
