10 Biggest Stories From Week 3 of the NFL Season

San Francisco 49ers Suffer Another Second Half Collapse

In Week 2 the 49ers suffered a monumental meltdown in the second half of the game against the Chicago Bears. They lost a game they should’ve easily won. In Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals the 49ers had a comfortable lead going into halftime and looked to be in control. However, the Cardinals came back and won the game by nine points. The 49ers are still the only team in the NFL without a touchdown in the second half of any of their games. No team can expect to win games in this league with that kind of production, or the lack thereof, in an entire half.

Baltimore Ravens Owner Says No One Will Lose Their Job

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti addressed the media on Monday regarding the Ray Rice investigation and the ESPN report that came out on Friday saying the Ravens actively tried covering it up. Bisciotti said the report used sources deriving from Ray Rice (Rice’s agent, Rice’s lawyer, Rice’s friends) and the report was clearly agenda driven by those sources. Their agenda is reinstatement for Rice. If they can make it look like the Ravens covered everything up, it’ll be easier for Rice to be reinstated. Bisciotti went on to say that no one in the organization will lose their job over this.

James Harrison to Rejoin Steelers

Last month linebacker James Harrison was set to retire. He is already set to come out of retirement. Not only that, but he is set to sign with his former team the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent last season away from the Steelers but will now be spending the rest of this season in Pittsburgh due to injuries to other players at the position.

Dennis Pitta Will Miss Remainder of Season

The Baltimore Ravens’ tight end Dennis Pitta will miss the rest of the 2014 season from a dislocated right hip he suffered on Sunday. This is the second time in 14 months he’s dislocated his right hip. Pitta has been a major security blanket for quarterback Joe Flacco and caught ten passes in Week 1 of this season. Moving forward it has to be a major concern for the Ravens organization if Pitta will ever be able to last an entire NFL season with the history of his right hip.

Detroit Lions’ Stephen Tulloch Out for Season

Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch suffered a torn ACL on Sunday during a celebration following a sack against the Green Bay Packers. Tulloch sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and proceeded to do Rodgers’ signature discount double-check move. When Tulloch’s foot hit the ground, his knee gave out. Tulloch will now have to wait until 2015 to get back onto the football field.

Ryan Tannehill Might Be Benched

The Miami Dolphins have been somewhat disappointing thus far in 2014. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has certainly had his problems, mainly with his accuracy. The Dolphins are preparing to play the Oakland Raiders in London in Week 4 and there have been reports that head coach Joe Philbin might bench Tannehill in favor of backup Matt Moore. This would really be shocking because it’s only Week 4 in Tannehill’s third year in the league and first year under new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor’s system.

Philadelphia Eagles Lose Another Offensive Lineman

The Eagles have been winning games without a lot of their offensive line. This past Sunday against the Washington Redskins they might’ve suffered their biggest loss yet: center Jason Kelce will miss two months with a sports hernia. This is such a huge loss because the center is the signal caller for the offensive line. He’s the one that reads the defense and recognizes blitzes that otherwise might get to the quarterback cleanly. The Eagles will now rely on backup David Molk moving forward, who had a pretty bad game against the Redskins for the 46 snaps he was in for.

New York Giants Get Their First Win

The Giants’ offense had looked pitiful through the first two weeks of the 2014 season. However, Week 2 looked less pitiful than Week 1 and Week 3 looked pretty darn good. The offensive line had a great game, which has been unusual for the Giants in recent years, and running back Rashad Jennings had himself a game with 176 yards and one touchdown. This win was even more surprising because it came against the 2-0 Houston Texans who boast one of the best front sevens in the NFL. The Giants will look to continue their offensive progression in Week 4 against a banged up Washington Redskins defense.

Frank Gore Unhappy With Lack of Carries

After another disappointing loss for the San Francisco 49ers, running back Frank Gore sat by his locker with his head in his hands and told reporters, “I can’t talk right now.” Gore had six carries for just ten yards for the entire game. Look for the 49ers to get back to what they know so well next week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cary Williams Unhappy With Practice Workload in Philadelphia

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly practices differently than other teams. He makes his practices rigorous and fast-paced. An advantage of this seems to be that the Eagles’ players are better conditioned than other teams and able to play better late in the game while the other team is starting to really slow down due to fatigue. Their cornerback Cary Williams, who loves to talk, came out after Sunday’s win over the Redskins and said that Kelly’s practices are too hard and tiring the team out. He also claimed that he wasn’t the only player on the team that felt this way. If players besides Williams feel this way and the team starts showing strong signs of fatigue late in the season, Kelly could lose the locker room in a hurry.
