2014 NFL Draft Comparison Series: Eric Ebron vs Jace Amaro

After last week's tight end comparison between Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Troy Niklas, I will now compare the top two tight ends in this year's class. Eric Ebron and Jace Amaro are two tight ends who are very different, but both could have significant impacts for the NFL team that drafts them this Spring. Without further ado, let's take a look at the best tight ends in this draft class.

2013 Season
Player Receptions Receiving Yards Touchdowns
Eric Ebron 62 973 3
Jace Amaro 106 1352 7

Eric Ebron

Ebron is a gifted athlete that has a wide receiver body, but he plays tight end. The North Carolina product reminds me a lot of Aaron Hernandez before he went to prison. With long arms and quick feet, Ebron will be an interesting player in the NFL because he is so athletically-gifted. One of the best traits for a pass-catcher is a big catch-radius. That is a quality that Ebron has. His run-blocking could use some work. But in his first year, Ebron should have multiple opportunities in the red-zone to bring in touchdowns. To know just how athletic Ebron is, it's worth noting that he played defensive end at times in 2012.

Jace Amaro

Amaro is an interesting player because he was the feature weapon of Texas Tech's offense in 2013. Even in his first year, Amaro could easily be a three-down player. Amaro has great hands and he is an exceptional run-blocker. At 6'5", 260 pounds, Amaro should have no problem adjusting to the NFL. He's not that fast, but he can make plays when he has the ball in head. He's not afraid to lower his shoulder and run over a defender. But Amaro has had injury concerns dating back to his high school days where he tore his ACL. Amaro has also had troubles with the law as he has been arrested on a few occasions.

College Outlook

Unlike the last comparison I did, these two tight ends did not have similar numbers at all. In fact, Amaro's numbers are actually video game numbers. While his quarterback Davis Webb has the potential to be great, it should be known that Webb was only a freshman this past season. Imagine if Amaro had Ebron's quarterback in Bryn Renner to throw him the ball. His numbers would be even more inflated. Just judging by the numbers, it clear that Amaro was more productive than Ebron was.

Verdict: Amaro

Hands

This one was tough because Amaro has better hands, but Ebron has the better frame. In a league where the tight end position is evolving, many teams would rather have a tight end that has more potential, rather than a tight end who was more productive in college. When Ebron gets his feet wet in the NFL, there is no reason why he can't have a pair of the best hands in the NFL. It is extremely close, but I'll take Ebron's hands over Amaro's at the next level.

Verdict: Ebron

Speed

Ebron has made it clear that "his speed is illegal." With the more athletic body, Ebron simply has a better size/speed ratio. Although Amaro weighs 260 pounds, he is deceivingly fast. Amaro has been clocked at around a 4.7 40-yard dash. In the NFL, acceleration speed is better than long-distance speed. Getting off the line of scrimmage and yards after the catch are important at the next level. Ebron is a better athlete, and he is faster off the line of scrimmage. Like I said earlier, Ebron is a tight end with the body of a wide receiver.

Verdict: Ebron

Run Blocking

Ebron has the tools to develop into an excellent run blocker, but Amaro is better at this skill as of now. Amaro has the build to be able to go at it against defensive linemen. Amaro's frame is basically NFL-ready. But, Ebron could use another 15-20 pounds to bulk up for the NFL. Both have potential to be good blockers in zone schemes though. But right now, Amaro is the better run blocker of the two.

Verdict: Amaro

Overall

When you look at these two special prospects, both are capable of being Pro Bowl players in the NFL. Right now, Amaro is the more-polished player. But with his elite frame and athleticism, Ebron could be a budding star in the NFL. Amaro is a more tradition tight end, where he stays in the box. Conversely, Ebron is capable of stepping outside and catching touchdown passes. Ebron has the skillset to do everything Jimmy Graham can do. With some seasoning in the NFL, the Tarheel could become a special player.

Verdict: Ebron
