Positives
Centerfielding Ability: Reynolds has shown the ability to read the quarterbacks eyes and use his athleticism to cover a ton of ground and get into passing lanes. He has a quick first step and takes great angles, getting to where he wants to be extremely quick. He reads the quarterbacks eyes as well as anyone and will jump a route right when the quarterback starts his throwing motion. Has shown good hands to pick the ball off when he gets his hands on it and his three touchdown returns show he knows what to do with the ball when he gets his hands on it.
Coverage: As good of a centerfielder as he is, Reynolds has also shown the ability to cover athletic tight ends out of the slot in man coverage. He has helped hold one of the best tight ends in college football, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, to six catches for 62 yards in his two games against him. On top of being able to cover athletic tight ends in the slot, he also is very good at providing help over the top.
Negatives
Over-Aggressive: Reynolds can be over-aggressive at times and be caught out of position by shifty running backs. He at times tries to go for the big hit on the ball carrier and misses the sure tackle because of it. Johnathan Franklin lit the Stanford defense up in 2012 and a big part of that was on Reynolds for missing tackles. He also has had a tendency to draw penalties for leading with his helmet. He needs to worry less about laying the big hit and make the sure tackle which will lead to less big plays given up and less penalties gotten.
NFL Comparison
Harrison Smith: When I watch Reynolds, I see a lot of the same things I saw in Smith when I watched him at Notre Dame. Both were able to read the quarterbacks eyes well and react. They are about the same size and both had one big year where they intercepted a lot of passes. Smith went into Minnesota and played very well both as a rookie and this past year. I expect Reynolds to be able to step in right away and play well too.
Draft Outlook
Reynolds is one of the top two or three free safeties in the draft and looks to be a second or early third round pick. When you watch him on tape, it’s obvious he has the centerfielder skills, but is also a little bit of a liability to give up big plays in the run game. However, he is intelligent and has the tools to be one of the best centerfielders in the NFL.
Best Fit
Baltimore Ravens: Ozzie Newsom has come out and said that he wants to get a free safety to play opposite Matt Elam in Baltimore. Reynolds is a guy who should be around when the Ravens go on the clock in the second round and can give them exactly what they want. A free safety who can play centerfield and allow Elam to be in the box more. Reynolds can cover tight ends in the slot as well as give help over the top. He is the exact type of player the Ravens need.
