2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Tevin Coleman

Name: Tevin Coleman

College: Indiana

Class: Junior

Position: Running Back

Height: 6’1"

Weight: 210

Background/Character
Leadership: 8 Experience: 8 Off-the-Field: 9
Mental Capacity: 9 Mental Toughness: 9 Durability: 9

Coleman was a two-year major contributor for Indiana. He primarily returned kicks in his frosh season. Very productive player that continued to improve as his role expanded. Highly productive player that was easily the most talented player on the offense. Zero known off field or locker room issues.

Final Grade: 8.66

Athleticism
Balance: 8 C.O.D: 8 Explosiveness: 9
Flexibility: 8 Coordination: 9 Body Type: 9

Good athlete with a huge frame, showing good burst and ability to break off long runs. Entire body moves together without being sloppy or out of control. Hips are somewhat stiff, as he’s not able to wrap his body when he plants. Overcomes this with his foot plants into the dirt.

Final Grade: 8.5

Running Talent
Game Speed: 9 Quickness: 8 Acceleration: 8
Leg Drive: 7 Lateral Control: 8 Stamina: 9

Coleman is a talented runner despite having few obvious running lanes to work with in college. He is willing to take what is given, and then explode the moment a hole comes free. Solid acceleration after he gets moving downhill a little to a great top speed. Pulls away from top-tier athletes with ease. Not overly powerful despite his big frame. Good feet but not elite quickness.

Final Grade: 8.16

Running Style
Vision: 8 Patience: 7 Anticipation: 9
Elusiveness: 8 Maneuverability: 9 Fumbling: 8

He’s an upright runner that doesn't lower the shoulder nearly enough for his capabilities. Coleman will be more effective in short yardage situations if he is willing to get lower with his pads in traffic and blow through tacklers. Goes down to first contact too often. Able to hold onto the football well. Patience with interior runs is good, not special.

Final Grade: 8.16

Non-Running
Football IQ: 8 Blocking Technique: 8 Pass Blocking: 8
Experience: 8 Hands: 8 Routes: 7

Coleman was often on the field on passing downs, gaining valuable experience as a pass blocker and receiver. He has good, not great hands, and mostly caught passes in the flats. He’s very willing to block, and has good technique. Coleman mirrors defenders effectively, but has to stay consistent with his hustle to meet them early in their rush. Strong upper body and nasty streak help him finish blocks.

Final Grade: 7.83

Player Comparison: DeMarco Murray
Projected Draft Position: 2nd Round
Best Scheme Fit: Power gaps
Injury History: None found
Career Accolades: First-Team Big-Ten
Career Stats: 3,219 rushing yards, 28 TDs

Final Analysis

Tevin Coleman was overlooked by many during the regular season despite posting an incredible 2,000-yard season against good competition and little help around him.

He’s a big-bodied back with room to grow into a more powerful option for offenses without relinquishing his excellent distance speed. With his frame, it’s not a surprise that his foot speed is somewhat average, but he is effective at minimizing the steps he takes. He cannot afford to waste motion because he doesn't break through contact especially well. His pad level is very high, so running lanes need to be present for him to be productive.

He does create a little for himself because he uses angles well and turns up field after pressing the linebackers very effectively. He projects as a starting running back quickly with his three-down talents.

Final Grade: 8.05 - 2nd Round Value
