Analyzing Josh McCown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong...

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Josh McCown, responsible for three wins in 2013 in Chicago, has left the Windy City for warmer confines in Tampa Bay, where he will compete with second-year quarterback Mike Glennon to start.

On Wednesday, Josh McCown signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay, ultimately ending any chance of McCown returning to Chicago, or any chance the Bucs will draft a quarterback early in the 2014 NFL Draft.

In 2013, McCown threw for 1,829 yards with 13 touchdowns and just one interception. McCown went 3-2 with a 109.1 quarterback rating and a completion percentage of 67%. What was so exciting about McCown's 2013 performance was his ability to come cold off the bench and manage the offense to three wins in five appearances as a starter.

Look for McCown to get a legitimate shot over Mike Glennon, who Love Smith (former Head Coach in Chicago during McCowns first tenure) as Smith could feel that Glennon needs more seasoning, and could earn that under McCown, 34, who may have another solid season left in him.

Overall, this is a solid, comfortable signing for Tampa Bay, a team that has spent willingly since free agency opened yesterday at 4PM EST. While it's concerning that a team is banking their 2014 success on the arm of a 34-year-old journeyman quarterback (Buccaneers being his eight team) McCown provides veteran stability to a young offense.
