Can Michael Sam make the St.Louis Rams 2014 Roster

Let’s talk about Michael Sam the football player like he wants us to do, and see if he has shot to make the 2014 St.Louis Rams opening day roster.  Sam is a 6’2” and 261-pound defensive end out of University of Missouri and the reigning SEC defensive Player of the Year with 11.5 sacks in 2013. Now that sounds all good on paper, but when you break Sam down as NFL player he really doesn’t matchup well in this league.

Sam isn’t really fast enough to play defensive end in the NFL and his length isn't good either with only 33 inch arms, so with being slow he really just rushes to a spot, and with Colin Kapernick and Russell Wilson in that division, that’s almost impossible. Not to mention, the Rams may have the best defensive line in football with Robert Quinn and Chris Long at the end positions.

With all that being said, when you’re a seventh-round pick that usually means you are going to start out by trying to make special teams. I think that’s where Sam needs to focus on if he is going to make this team, but my final verdict is Sam is too slow and has bad lateral movement which is going to prevent him from making special teams teams, and from making the Rams roster in general. I'm sure all eyes will be watching to see how this plays out before final roster cuts in late August.
