Daily Fantasy Football Busts: Week 2

Daily fantasy owners don’t have the luxury of a “we’ll get ‘em next week” mentality, as one or two poor performances can sink a lineup, ruin a week, and lose real hard-earned cash! Identifying players that are high-risk “boom or bust” types is a key way to staying ahead of the competition, finding that little edge and lining your pockets. With that in mind, here’s a look at four players on FanDuel that could bust your bankroll quickly.

Julio Jones - Wide Receiver, Atlanta Falcons ($8,400)

Matt Ryan has performed historically poor outdoors, will see a ton of blitz packages from the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense, and Leon Hall will match up against Jones most of the time. Sure, there’s always the chance that Jones will show off his freak athletic talent and have a huge day, but all signs point to things being pretty quiet on his end, which is a big problem given his price tag as the fourth-most expensive wide receiver. For the same money, you can roll with A.J. Green or Dez Bryant, or even save a few $100 on a number of better options. Buyer beware is in full effect here.

Seattle Seahawks D/ST ($5,400)

It’s always tempting to save a little bit on a couple of players so you can splurge on a top defense. Plus, how can you not be enamored by the NFL’s best defense?  But not so fast my friends. The Seahawks face the San Diego Chargers this week, a team that moves at a slow, methodical pace, pounding it out on the ground and running low-risk passing plays. Last season they were among the league leaders with the fewest interceptions, fumbles lost and sacks allowed. With Seattle being the fourth-most expensive defense this week, I don’t like their chances of living up to their price. Spend this money elsewhere and grab a solid, middle-of-the-pack D/ST unit.

Reggie Bush - Running Back, Detroit Lions ($7,800)

If Week 1 was any indication, it seems we have a full blown platoon situation in Detroit’s backfield, between Bush and Joique Bell. While Bell seems to get the bulk of the traditional running plays, Bush makes his living in the passing game and bouncing to the outside. Unfortunately, the Carolina Panthers stingy defense were steadfast against the run last year, especially shutting down ‘backs in the flats; allowing only one receiving touchdown by a running back all season. It’s going to be a long day for Bush.

Zac Stacy - Running Back, St. Louis Rams ($7,700)

This is another situation just like the one in Detroit, with Stacy splitting time pretty much 50-50 with Benny Cunningham. Platoon roll, outdoors on the road against a talented Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense that allowed a mere 3.43 YPC last week, and a third-string quarterback possibly under center? I shudder thinking of the utter disappointment Stacy is going to cause this weekend. As the 12th-most expensive ‘back, there’s WAY too much working against Stacy to justify spending so much on him. Avoid at all costs.
