Fantasy Football Review: #96, Willis McGahee

Willis McGahee, Running Back, Denver Broncos (No. 96).

This veteran running back was off to a damn good start prior to injuring his knee against the San Diego Chargers in Week 11. He recorded a season-best 24.4 fantasy points in a 112-yard and two touchdown performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.

Overall, McGahee averaged just 11 fantasy points per outing, which made him a bottom feeder RB2 option in most standard leagues.

One of the primary reasons for this was the emergence of Knowshon Moreno from bust status in Denver. Equally as important, the Broncos offense featured the pass more than the run with Peyton Manning slinging the ball around the field.

He averaged just seven fantasy points in his last three games, the last game against San Diego coming with just seven rushes prior to leaving with a regular season-ending injury. That being said, McGahee did average nearly 4.4 yards per rush and tallied over 900 total yards in 10 games. Those are solid complementary numbers for a running back in fantasy football.

Moving forward, it is hard to gauge McGahee's value. He will no longer be the sole featured back in Denver with Moreno and rookie  rising-star Ronnie Hillman in the mix. In fact, the Broncos could easily make the decision to cut McGahee loose in March to save money under the cap.

That would actually be the ideal scenario for those looking for production from the veteran running back in 2013 as he will likely see more carries with another team. I am pretty sure the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, among others, would feature McGahee more in their offense than the Broncos will.

As it is, McGahee is probably nothing more than a decent FLEX option in 2013.

Next Up: Greg Olsen, Tight End, Carolina Panthers (No. 95).
