After over 1,000 days, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon will return to the field on Sunday and play in a regular season NFL game. Not only will Gordon make his return to the NFL, but he is expected to start on Sunday and play significant snaps.
Gordon will find himself immediately plugged into a high percentage of fantasy lineups this week. The optimism is understandable given the talents we saw from Gordon in 2013 and '14, even now he is still only 26 years old and reports out of Browns' practices indicated he already looked like the team's best wide receiver on the field.
There should be optimism and Gordon is a must-own player right now in fantasy, but this is a matchup that will be hard to trust. Even beyond the fact that it's been over 1,000 days since he suited up in a meaningful game, he also faces a tough matchup. Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward is one of the best cover cornerbacks in the NFL and cornerback Trevor Williams is enjoying a breakout season with great coverage marks.
It makes this an extremely tough matchup for Gordon and even if he sees a fairly high volume of targets, Gordon is just an extremely risky play and is outside the top 30 wide receivers this week.
