Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy has been among the biggest disappointments in fantasy football this season. Still dealing with an ankle injury he suffered Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, Lacy is the 38th-best fantasy performer at his position after six games.
The former second-round pick is also coming off a performance against the San Diego Chargers that saw him lose most of the Packers' touches to James Starks after putting up just three yards on four attempts. Considering Lacy's preseason ADP had him as a late first-round pick, this is surely disappointing to those who rostered him.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy pretty much ended any hope that Lacy might get back on track within the foreseeable future when speaking to the media following the team's win over San Diego. McCarthy indicated that the Packers will continue to "ride the hot hand" at the running back position moving forward. After Starks put up 117 yards and two scores on Sunday, it's safe to say he's the "hot hand" right now.
With what's happening in Green Bay, the expectation has to be that those who own Lacy will be in a panic to find someone that can provide even RB/FLEX production from that position moving forward. And if you are in a decent position at running back or have a FLEX guy outside of running back you can rely on, it might be time to kick the tires on a potential buy-low trade for Lacy.
The reasoning is simple here.
McCarthy and the Packers might not want to admit it, but Lacy is the much more-talented running back than Starks. If the latter is going to either handcuff or completely take carries from Lacy over the next few weeks, it will lead to Lacy actually getting back to 100 percent without having to put too much of a workload on his injured ankle. That should allow him to be fresh when the important part of the fantasy football season gets going next month and into December.
With the Packers at 6-0 on the year, they can afford to potentially rest Lacy in order to have him fresh when it counts more late in the year. In doing so, he could be in a position to dominate at that point.
Buy low now, risk the possibility of gaining a minimal amount of value now, and look for him to blow up later in the year. That's our recommendation to you.
