5 Most Surprising NHL Teams Thus Far

As we enter the first few weeks of the NHL season, there are already a lot of suprising teams around the league both good and bad. Here's a list of the five teams who have surprised us all this season.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Raise your hand if you had the Blue Jackets starting out the season 0-8 and then firing head coach Todd Richards only to replace him with John Tortorlella. I don't think anyone had that scenario at all. The Blue Jackets have just been a disaster this season and considering how bad things are for them, I don't think they're going to make the playoffs after a start like this.

To even have a 50 percent chance of making the playoffs, the Jackets would have to go 41-25-9 which would be extremely difficult. The defense hasn't been good for that team this year and Sergei Bobrovsky has lost confidence in himself. If this slide continues, don't be surprised if the front office wants to make a couple trades so that they can improve for next season.

Calgary Flames

I, like a lot of people, was very high on the Calgary Flames going into this season. They had an amazing season last year when they finished 3rd in the Pacific division and got to the second round of the playoffs but it's been a very bad start for the Flames.

They are 1-5 through the first six games of the season and they have not had good goaltending at all. Kari Ramo started three of those six games but he was placed on waivers yesterday because Calgary is not satisfied with his play. Flames GM Brad Treliving said that he would like to talk a big trade so he's not afraid of making a splash this year. If this slide continues, head coach Bob Hartley could very well find his seat warming up.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks started out the season 0-3-1 and many people in the media started to wonder if Bruce Boudreau's seat was getting warm. Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray said that he was going to evaluate the team on the coming five game roadtrip and then if a decision had to be made, he would make it.

So far, the Ducks won their first game of the season. It came on that road trip so that's a good start for them. Now if the Ducks keep winning, none of this will matter but they didn't look like the team we saw from last year through the first four games which look a little concerning. Bet on the Ducks to turn it around soon as they are the best team in the Pacific.

Arizona Coyotes

For a team that wasn't supposed to do well this year at all, they've surely done a lot better then expected this season. Anthony Duclair looks better and better every game and rookie Max Domi looks like he's going to be a really good player in the next few years. His release, especially on his backhand, looks just like Sidney Crosby's which is amazing.

Goaltender Mike Smith has also had a good season for the Coyotes as he only gave up one goal in back to back nights against the Kings and Penguins. Arizona is currently in 3rd place in the Pacific division but I wouldn't expect that to last for too much longer. They're still a couple years away from being a good team again but this start to the season is very encouraging to them.

Montreal Canadians

Montreal is a team that no one expected to start out the season 7-0-0 but here we are. The Canadians are the best team in the league right now and part of that is because of how much of a God Carey Price still is. He's still making ridiculous saves like he did last year and looks like the clear winner for the Vezina yet again even though we're only seven games into the season. Players such as Tomas Plekanec, Alex Galchenyuk, and Max Pachioretty have also all been good this season and it wouldn't surprise me if they got the President's trophy at the end of the season.
